Record/Vinyl + Digital Album
limited edition 7” vinyl album, with hand-printed and flocked interference. The A/B sides on the vinyl are from sessions hosted by the American Academy in Rome Society of Fellows, with the audio re-amplified through the cryptoporticus at the AAR in Rome on July 6, 2021 with support from Jean Dommermuth, Molissa Fenley, and Anna Serotta.
The record functions more as an art object, applying weave patterns over the recorded audio. It is a very limited edition (each one is unique) and it may damage needles on record players, so please understand that it is more for looking and less for playing.
Includes digital pre-order of between systems and grounds - the overshot sessions.

Percussive machine sounds meld with synthesized electronic tones and noise bursts out of feedback created between spaces spanning countries and continents – <<between systems and grounds: the overshot sessions>> involve bridging two disparate mediums – live-electronics and live-textile construction – together to examine contrasting spaces and time scales. This project album plays with patterns of tone and noise, computational techniques in art making practices, and the sharing of space and time through communal work.
<<between systems and grounds>> began as a slowly evolving collaboration in 2015 between composer Paula Matthusen and visual artist Olivia Valentine with a desire to have their seemingly disparate practices speak to one another. This improvisatory framework began with lacemaking and acoustic feedback generation in 2016. Olivia Valentine’s acquisition of an AVL CompuDobby Loom in 2018 enabled the development of audio-responsive software to influence and create patterns woven by hand on the loom. Simultaneously, the duo developed an audio synthesis program that could be triggered by the patterns and actions of the loom, forming a slow feedback loop in which process and artifact are interwoven.
Much of the groundwork for the overshot sessions was developed with the intention of sharing the same physical space and time. In response to the disruptions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the project became reconfigured through a number of streaming platforms so that audio could be passed back and forth between Middletown, CT and Des Moines, IA where Matthusen and Valentine respectively are based. The strategy taken was not to fight the latencies inherent in these various streaming technologies, but instead to emphasize them as a series of delay lines to be utilized for their own musical and creative potential. This resulted in a series of performances and presentations, often linking a series of different spaces and geographies, including Des Moines Art Week (IA & CT), the Des Moines Arts Center Salon 4700 (IA & CT), Mise-En_Place (NYC, IA & CT), The American Academy in Rome Society of Fellows (NYC, IA, CT, & Rome, Italy), and Doily Free Zone (IA, CT, & Wollongong, Australia).
The album is available as both a digital release with 5 tracks and a limited edition 7” vinyl album, with hand-printed and flocked interference.
